A Really Cool Mashup of Second Life, Justin TV and Twitter
Published by IdeaTagging.com April 6th, 2007 in All Business Ideas, BlogFor all I know this already exists in some form but it occurs to me that something really cool could be developed by mashing up Second Life, Justin.TV and Twitter - three of the currently most talked about web applications in the blogosphere, considered by many to be leading the evolution of the web from its current web 2.0 state to what has been referred to as… well, web 3.0.
As I have posted before, Twitter in its current form is not my thing because quite simply, I just don’t think there is enough substance to it and besides, I am not interested in anyone enough to want to know what they are doing all day everyday - or worse, to be updated by one annoying text message after another.
It might surprise you therefore that I actually do like Justin.TV, since like Twitter it is based on a voyeuristic desire to monitor the goings and comings of another person. The thing I like about Justin.TV is that I can visit the site at anytime, select (from the highlights) one or two startup related interviews that Justin has conducted, whilst totally ignoring the presumably many hours of footage of Justin asleep in his bed.
As for Second Life, I know precious little about it and I reckon that a lot of people, like me, have heard about it and been sufficiently intrigued to visit the Second Life website once or twice but not interested enough to actually sign-up and participate.
So, what if Linden Labs - the company behind Second Life were to enable characters in their world to go about their everyday (second) lives, streaming live footage kind of like Justin.TV and sending what-I’m-doing-now text messages to followers via Twitter either on demand, at regular intervals or when note worthy events take place. Ok, so an avatar in Second Life wouldn’t use a real life camera like Justin does but so what! As long as there is activity that can be captured on video, it can be streamed.
Now wouldn’t that be cool? The benefit to Linden Labs would be that people like me with little knowledge of Second Life could visit a site and watch footage that might perhaps explain what all the fuss is about. It would be better if such footage could be viewed without having to register. If the footage were sufficiently interesting then who knows, I and others like me might just sign up. To this end, it would probably be a good idea if people (most likely Second Life enthusiasts) could make and rate highlights so as to indicate to visitors which highlights are worth watching.
The Twitter features of the mashup could be put to interesting use by Second Life enthusiasts, who perhaps already have their own Second Life characters. So I guess if one second lifer (A) is following another second lifer (B) on Twitter then A could for instance quickly go to a location that B has indicated she is at so as to meet up with her. After all, getting from one location to another in Second Life is presumably a lot quicker and easier than in real life - a simple matter of teleporting oneself I would imagine.
To expose my Second Life ignorance even further, I assume that it is (or will in the future be) possible to automate Second Life characters and in that case can imagine people subscribing to Twitter messages from their own avatars to keep track of what they are up to. How cool would it be if you could instruct your character to “Tweet me if you bump into Jane today”?
So what do you think - cool or not?
