VoSnap - Idea To Startup In one Weekend
Published by IdeaTagging.com July 8th, 2007 in All Business Ideas, General Posts, Web/tech, BlogA web application known as VoSnap is being developed as I write, by 70 or so people who have gathered for the sole purpose of starting up a web application and business in a single weekend. The crew includes developers, lawyers, marketing people etc.
For weeks leading up to the weekend, people were invited to suggest ideas for which product to build. VoSnap was eventually chosen and is proving to be a good choice. Essentially, it is Twitter-like application for quick decision making by groups. You publish a question or poll to your network and get their votes in a snap - VoSnap.
I think VoSnap could be a hit because of the publicity that it will get from the manner in which it was developed. It also has some merit as a product. Email is typically quite slow as a means of soliciting votes from a group and VoSnap aims to speed things up. I believe it allows the sender to include a deadline by which votes must be in. Also, I foresee mashups with other web apps (e.g. ikordo - the meeting planner app) and social networking sites. A facebook app is already in the works apparently.
If VoSnap does prove to be popular then I think Startup Weekend itself will become a regular event. Personally, I think the concept rocks.
Update: The marketing team for VoSnap have come up with their first promo. See the video here
Update: VoSnap just got TechCrunched

Thanks! And, that’s the hope - we’re documenting everything about the event and hope to publish a “best practices” manual shortly after we’re all done. Which at this point is in less than 24 hours…
Thanks for the write-up.
I think that a best practices manual would not only be valuable to readers, it is also a clever marketing idea because it will increase and perpetuate publicity - much like the 37 Signals guide has done for 37 Signals and their products.
I have just read (http://startupweekend.com/?p=117) that Startup Weekend didn’t quite work out as planned. It has been decalred a failure because the planned business didn’t launch at the end of the weekend.
As someone who followed the events closely through the weekend, I am very disappointed. Still lessons are bound to have been learnt and I do hope that this does not turn out to be the last Startup Weekend attempted.
A lessons learned summary should be published and hopefully the next gathering can use it for success.
