It is a worrying trend in the wonderful world of Web 2.0 that web businesses are increasingly fixated on growing user numbers, almost as though that were a goal in itself.

You would think it was obvious that making money is the goal and that whether you make this money by charging a fee to a few thousand users or from displaying ads to millions of non-paying users, what is ultimately important is that you do make money. This is not so obvious it seems, going by the suggestion on this post on TechCrunch that Mundu, a chat app on the iPhone is doomed for daring to charge users for using the app.
